Omitlán

Omitlán

This municipality is located 18 Kilometers from the city of Pachuca. It is one of the youngest of the state, created in 1862; its municipal seat is one of the most picturesque towns of the region. However, because it is situated between Real del Monte and Huasca, both mining settlements with a rich heritage, which have gained momentum lately regarding their tourist development, it is unnoticed most of the time. Curiously enough, it was its geographical location what made it one of the main sites to open ore processing plants; by the way, there are only few material and immaterial vestiges of these places. It seems that oral tradition here has not contributed to keep its industrial past alive.

Omitlán means “place between two” making reference to two big rocks forming el Zumate, which has an altitude of 3,000 meters above sea-level, on top of it we can have a panoramic scenery that goes from El Chico National Park, the towns of Omitlán, Velasco and Venta de Guadalupe, as well as Real del Monte, Atotonilco El Grande and part of Huasca municipality. From this point we can very well see the mine tailing dams of Velasco. The tailing dams (known as Jales in Spanish) are the residues of the ores processed after extracting silver and gold. Seven ore processing plants were established in this small town, this gives us an idea of the importance of the place between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century; Sánchez and Velasco plants processed Pachuca’s ores using the Freiberg system while the Guerrero plant was considered the most modern of the country at the moment of its inauguration in 1908.

In this municipality, divided only by a street, a town called Velasco is located, here every December the 26th there is a big celebration honoring Our Lord of Velasco; due to the characteristics of the site where the church is placed, we are sure it was part of the ore processing plant of the same name. The processing hacienda and the chimney which characterize this village are private property and we can only admire them from the exterior; however, we recommend visitors to tour this community. It is possible to leave the car at the entrance and walk around the hacienda full of trees and agapanthus. Next to it, there is a small house with a gothic arch and just in front of it; the Sanctuary of Our Lord of Velasco. Before we arrive to this place it is possible to observe the great chimney.
